Thanks to Myanmar’s rapidly improving economy, the country’s tourism sector has been experiencing exponential growth, which has resulted in vast opportunities for the hospitality industry. Since opening its doors to the outside world, the Myanmar government has initiated the ambitious programme to increase the number of international tourist arrivals and revenue by the year 2020. This in turn has prompted the construction of new hotel and resort facilities and driven up the demand for new, high-quality goods and services for the hospitality industry.

Earlier in May, the Myanmar Times reported that six properties had been given permission by the Myanmar Investment Commission to construct new hotels on the Myeik archipelago, in the Thanintharyi region. This archipelago contains over 800 islands, of which only 12 can receive tourists, by permission of the Myanmar Investment Commission.

Owners of the six properties, located on KyunPhilar, Barlar, Phoe Ni, WaLal, 115 and Bo Nat Kyaw islands, will begin to build hotels as soon as they get permission from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, said U Nyo Aye,director of the Hotels and Tourism Department in Tanintharyi.

At present, Tanintharyi has 39 hotels and guest houses with 1525 rooms. According to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, approximately 67,647 foreign tourists visited the region in 2017. However they expect these numbers will grow throughout this year. “The number of tourists in 2017 increased compared to 2016, and we expect to attract more visitors in 2018,” U Nyo Aye said.

From being unknown to booming over a span of few years, the Myanmar hospitality industry is enjoying a robust boom, driven by surging tourist arrivals, thus fuellinga demand for a wider variety of high-quality hospitality equipment and supplies.
